Painting an authentic individual face is a complex task that requires one to think of a multitude of things, so that it is a good idea to introduce the process step-by-step. In this specific article I will talk you through the creation of an electronic family portrait painting (right), explaining the process as I go along. The techniques apply to painting any type of face: male, female, or humanoid alien, and fear off it’ll apply to non-portraits too.

In that sense it ought to be helpful as an over-all guide to making any digital painting. In previous articles I’ve already discussed the anatomy of the head and the drawing of specific features therefore I won’t repeat everything that more than necessary. I’ll make reference to the individual being painted as the ‘sitter’ but let’s face it, you are improbable to have a real person posing next to your computer – the person in my painting is imaginary and that’s fine too.

There are many ways to paint a portrait. No doubt some are more effective and effective than others, but obviously you can experiment and paint nevertheless, you want. These aren’t rules. Treat any tutorial as a couple of ideas to help you find your own way. To produce a successful painting we need a good idea. Put some thought into your concept, clarifying who is sitting, his or her personality, and the disposition you’re trying to accomplish.

Because this is a portrait tutorial we will focus on a mind and bust, but you’ll need to consider your background too. Will the sitter be put against a neutral texture and color, such as a photographer’s backdrop? Will they maintain an available room, in a garden, in their office? If you’re using photo reference, it should be good quality with clear light ideally, in one main light source ideally. The less suitable the reference, the more you will have to rely upon your own creative resources.

Some artists do only minimal planning. I make a great deal of changes throughout my painting. Personally I love to know where I’m going, but inevitably a few of your decisions will get made and remade, as you go along. When you’re prepared to start, create a new file in your software. When choosing a canvas size, you need to take into account what the ultimate result will be. Will your image be used for print or only on the net?

A print image should be at a higher quality than the one intended to be shown online. Consider painting your picture at a more impressive size than the main one it’ll be reproduced in. Some artists start on a full-size canvas immediately, with a dimension of say 1500 to 4000 pixels on the longest side.

If you’re uncertain what size your completed painting should turn out, find digital paintings online to compare with. Also, a study from your finished work. If it appears pixellated you might determine you needed a higher quality to get the results you desired; conversely you may find you made it too large and can reduce it without loss.

With a little of practice you’ll get an idea about resolutions and document sizes. I’d avoid a white canvas: it is a bit less comfortable to stare at while painting, and it shall distort your sense of color, since colors look against white darker. Choose a neutral canvas color. The canvas influences your skin shades, as it sits next to them and may partly show through the colors you paint together with it, rather like in traditional painting.

If you currently have a color palette in mind, you could choose a color that rests properly with it, either harmonizing with the intended foreground or contrasting with it. For my painting, to help develop a genial feeling I chose upon light clothing and a light history, the head looking relatively dark. Name your file, save it, and keep saving as you complement. It is a terrible thing to reduce hours of work because of a butterfingers moment or an inopportune lunge by the kitty.

The sizes of an image are measured in pixels, e.g. a 600×800 image is 600 pixels wide and 800 high. The more pixels there are, the bigger the image’s resolution, i.e. the more info the image can contain. A whole lot of confusion comes from two terms, ‘DPI’ (dots per in .) and ‘PPI’ (pixels per inch).
