Publishing MP3 sound online can mean you spending hefty license fees. This was news if you ask me. It might be news for you too:MP3 isn’t absolve to use if you’re an online publisher. BUT – i want to be clear – there are a few opt-outs. It appears you don’t need to pay any permit fees if:It’s for personal use or non commercial reasons (not producing income).
However, when there’s alternatives I don’t understand why anyone publishing audio online would like to or should distribute in MP3 format. So what’s the best alternate? Well – it’s all about OGG.Okay, a strange name slightly. Here are the facts:OGG is simply as high quality as MP3. The only current drawback of OGG is that it isn’t as widely supported by audio players as MP3.BUT – I’m convinced this will change.
As increasingly more online publishers say “No!” to paying big and unneeded licensing fees, more and more audio will be released online in OGG format, meaning more and more sound players will support OGG. So if you are currently publishing sound online in MP3 format, exactly what does this mean for you? And would you make a little effort to convert your audio rather, or pay licensing fees every year? So how do you convert MP3 to OGG?
Easy – use an audio converter. So use WinLAME to convert your MP3 to OGG. Focus on keeping the MP3 and OGG files round the same size (I’ve actually found OGG documents to be somewhat smaller). And then compare the sound quality. I’m going to be surprised when you can find any difference between them.
Now this transformation process usually takes a while. For approximately six hours of sound it took my computer at least a couple of hours of processing time. But I simply still left the computer to it and returned when it was done. You can even leave this process running if you have a lot of audio to convert overnight. Some OGG sound has “Tags”. Tags are extra information inside the audio file which includes the name of the song for example often.

At this time around (this will most likely change) some sound players have trouble playing OGG with “Tag” information in them. So take the tag information out. The software Install, and begin it up. Then just choose to “Remove All Tags” from your OGG documents. This is fiddly, but needs to be done. Important Note: Remember about the sound you’ve got in Zip files too. You’ll need to recreate those Zip files with OGG sound instead of MP3 sound and re-upload them. That is pretty advanced so don’t do that if you’re uncomfortable with the process.
Then type: find . Download these files and have a look at them in a text message editor. They’ll demonstrate the path of each MP3 and Zip document on your server to enable you to efficiently find which data files you need to convert to OGG. Really handy.Okay – so after you have converted and published the audio, you’ll need to change the text around the download links. You will have to remove any reference to “MP3” from your website.
I don’t suggest replacing it with “OGG” on a web page for example since that will most likely mistake people. Just replace “MP3” with “downloadable sound” or “high quality downloadable audio”. And then on your download web pages mention that the sound is within OGG format which is simply as high quality as MP3 and just as quick to download. Then link to a couple of sound players that you know for a fact support OGG.
So make sure to tell your visitors to download and install that version. It’s still free though which means that your site visitors won’t have to invest any extra cash just to pay attention to your audio. And that is virtually all the steps needed to convert your published sound from MP3 to OGG, which can save you a little fortune in licensing fees without compromising audio speed or quality of download.
Within the developer console, the type of code associated to the author’s name that you selected will be highlighted (see the below image).
